By the time Edsere woke, the rain had stopped. He hadn’t meant to sleep but with Asher missing and Sahvin accusing him of traitorous behavior, there was little he could do than retreat into himself to consider what options he had. Deep in his heart he felt certain he would never see either man again and he became determined to do one thing: survive.

Edsere changed into dry clothing and took an inventory of his supplies, tossing aside all but the essentials. His plan was to scale the mountain until he could see The Cauldron and then head towards it, from where he would be able to reorient himself and make his way home. If he found Sahvin or Asher along the way, all the better. But he couldn’t worry about that now. Once he returned to Virfortis he would use the 250,000 crowns to hire a scouting party the size of a small city and they would raze the forest in their search for the other members of The Golden Rooster Company. He would find them, dead or alive–that much he promised himself.

But for now Edsere needed to make sure he lived and so he traced the hem of the white mountain, looking for passage up its slick, gravelly slope.

He traveled until nightfall, unable to find any path that led more than a dozen or two feet up. He considered heading back into the dark forest to try to find the edge of The Cauldron’s clearing but decided against it, fearing that it would be too easy to lose himself in those labyrinthine woods. So instead he slept under a fat tree, covering his body with damp leaves and dirt to hide himself from anyone–or anything–that might seek to do him harm.

In the morning he woke as the sun was still rising and immediately headed off without breakfast. Then, maybe an hour or two into his hike around the mountain’s base in search of safe vertical passage, he heard it: a woman screaming.

Edsere rushed towards the sound of the screams and found a woman with her clothes ripped and torn, crimson scars marring her arms and belly. She looked at Ed with wild green eyes.

“You’re one of them,” she said, backing away across the carpet of fallen leaves.

“One of who?” asked Edsere, holding up his hands in a show of surrender.

“The men,” said the woman. Her hair was like faded straw, long and flowy. “The ones who took the others.”

“I didn’t take anyone,” said Edsere.

The woman kept backing up, clutching at her stomach. She shook her head wildly from side to side.

Edsere took a step towards her. “That looks pretty bad,” he said, eyeing her wound. “If you let me take a look I might be able to help you.”

Again the woman shook her head.

“Who did this to you?” asked Edsere. “Was it one of the men you mentioned?”

“It was the Maneater,” whispered the woman.

Edsere paused. “The Maneater?”

“The Maneater of Gynos. It doesn’t like outsiders,” the woman continued, her hands now scarlet from her bloody wound.
